Spring is on its way and I CANNOT wait!!! Along with the many new plans and projects, I have one other goal for my garden this year. I want to stay ahead of the weeds!!
Now, every year I try really hard but I have never really had the right tools. Of the dozens of beds scattered around my yard, the smaller ones are usually pretty good. I can take a trowel to them once a week and keep them looking good. It`s the larger ones though that get WAY ahead of me. A trowel just doesn`t cut it, it takes way too long and I cheat quite a bit and skip a week, which then becomes two, and then three…..you know how it is.
So I figured some new tools would make a great addition to my tool shed and I would finally be able to stay ahead of the weeds. Lee Valley was kind enough to send me just what I needed, A diamond bladed shuffle hoe.
This is a special type of hoe with a 7 inch blade and is designed so that the blade rests horizontal on the ground meaning just a slight lowering or raising of the handle will allow the blade to cut into the soil and remove weeds. The handle, measuring 60 inches allows for anyone to be able to use the tool comfortably and removes the need to bend reducing the stress on your back.
I was first introduced to it last year when I was working for a company that did a lot of weeding and ever since, I’ve wanted to get one of my own. Unlike your typical draw hoe, it has a double sided blade so you can keep the hoe in the ground at all times and work back and forth severing roots in both directions. This means it takes less time and you don`t pull any soil along with the hoe, instead all it does is loosen the soil.
Of course, this is a benefit unto itself as loose soil means weeds are easier to pull and they have trouble growing new roots since weeds hate growing in loose soil. Another bonus is that the seeds can`t germinate as easily so whenever you use the diamond bladed shuffle hoe, not only do you eliminate existing weeds but you also help prevent new ones from growing.
Now, the greatest tools are useful for many jobs, that’s why we all love shovels and trowels, we can use them for planting, weeding, transplanting, dividing, moving soil etc. and the shuffle hoe is one of these great tools. Not only is it the best tool for weeding I’ve ever used but it also comes in handy when planting. The wide blade can also be used on its side to cut into hard soil and make small trenches for seeds.
So overall, this is one of my favorite tools and receiving one has made the wait for spring even harder because I really want to get out and use it in my own garden. It’s the one tool that has made me enjoy weeding and I think it may just do the same for you.
You can order one or read a little more about it here on their website. If you want to see some of their other great gardening products, you can find a list here. If you’d prefer to see this hoe in use, I made a little video that you can check out.
